    Thinner isn't necessarily better.

    One example would be the Mazda RX-8. Mazda specify Dexelia 5w30, but from experience the specialist engine rebuilders recommend changing to a 10w40.

    Another would be trying a 5w30 in a FIRE 1108 engine. It burns it and pours it out all over when given the beans.

    You're right, thinner isn't always better overall, but it does give better cold start protection.

    all this oil talk has got me :S haha. I'm using 10-40w semi synthetic in my punto mk2.. seems to run good on it. although does suffer from cold starts is the castrol oil worth getting? or should i try somthing else? don't really want to pay more than £30 for 4ltr of oil... recomendations would be nice

    The Castrol Edge is good stuff. If you go for any well branded good quality 5w-40 synthetic it would be a good uograde over the 10w-40 semi.

    Ill have a look tonight, see how much the family friends garage can get it in for thanks for the advice, picked up some castrol 10w-40 semi syn at asda this morning they have it half price for 4L of the stuff

    If you're lucky enough to have a Home Bargains near you, you can get Gulf Tec Plus 10w40 semi synthetic - £8.99 for 4 litres.
